Designed by Alex Gufler, Ton’s new Grand Slam collection exhibits impressive wood bending, representing a swift exchange between the designer’s long-standing experience with furniture design and Ton’s perfected woodworking techniques.
The collection’s tennis theme is not entirely new for Ton. In the past, its factory was used to make tennis rackets, therefore Grand Slam pays homage to a woodworking technique that has been with the brand without interruption for almost 160 years.
“The chairs’ generous, curved form, seen typically in metal furniture, presents a technical challenge when made in wood,” Gufler comments.
“Responding to this challenge requires significant mastery of craft to ensure the product meets strength and durability requirements.”
When designing the collection, Gufler paired Ton’s trademark bent wooden rods with a visually light seat made from gently curved plywood, all with no visible joins.
The barstool is also available in two height variations.
The chair can be stacked vertically, using up little space even in large numbers.
Upholstery options offer additional variety, and the chairs can be made with a smooth finish, an upholstered seat, or upholstered seat and backrest.
Thanks to its long-standing collaboration with ROHI, a company creating premium wool fabrics, this year Ton has revealed three shades of the new Milkyway upholstery fabric.
The woollen textile exhibits a shimmering milky way effect that repeats every three metres. The result is an upholstery pattern that varies slightly from chair to chair, boasting maximum impact when used on larger chair groupings.
