Lasvit in Mandarin Oriental Jakarta
Sculptural lighting specialist Lasvit has provided several glass installations for the newly launched Li Feng restaurant at the Mandarin Oriental Jakarta.
The interiors of the new dining space have been designed by Hong Kong-based LRF Designers Limited, and are inspired by the voyage history and spices-trade between China and the old Jakarta, with the sailing theme incorporated into its glass art and paintings as well as Lasvit’s ceiling sculptures.
The main sculpture, titled Across the Sea, features amber-coloured glass elements that evoke stylised ancient junk sails and the sunset. A black metal frame contains the whole scene, creating a mysterious and dreamy atmosphere.
“The concept is derived from merchant voyages when junk sails cruised the seas,” comments Lasvit designer Michaela Mertlova. “Water surfaces are represented upside down, using hand-made turquoise glass components in the contours of waves. Their special crackled textures create a sparkling sea-like effect.”
Two additional designs by Mertlova will adorn the space’s private dining areas. Here, a pair of opal and amber pieces reference the simple shape of classic paper lanterns with an elegant vertical cut that provides intriguing glass reflections. Their warm glow and black metal frames are enhanced by LED retro light bulbs, achieving a traditional shape with contemporary feel while retaining the piece’s natural warmth.
Elsewhere, The Beacon lighting sculpture is elegantly placed over a round dining table for nine guests. This piece is comprised of oversized cut-crystal rods with a pattern that highlights the prismatic effect of fine cut crystal.
Mertlova continues: “As with many artworks, there were several inspirations blending a final result. I thought of the sunlight and moonlight that accompanied sailors across the seas, as well as the symbol of a crown and idea of a lighthouse, a beacon of refracted light that guides sailors home.”
Li Feng offers a combination of high-end cuisine, high-quality service and luxurious furnishings. The menu presents a blend of traditional dishes and a creative rendition of classics, including deep-fried swan dumpling with black pepper duck meat and sweet and sour chicken with pineapple and bell pepper.
While the restaurant serves authentic yet contemporary Cantonese dishes, Lasvit’s glass lighting sculptures are based on traditional craft interpreted through a modern design vision.
