Sol Kerzner passes away
Sol Kerzner, South African business magnate and founder of Southern Sun Hotel Group, One&Only Resorts and Kerzner International, has passed away at the age of 84.
A key figure in the history of entertainment resorts, notable achievements from Kerzner’s 45-year career include the development of Sun City – the colossal gaming resort north of Johannesburg containing four hotels – and an early string of influential luxury properties under the Southern Sun banner that put South Africa’s hospitality scene on the map.
The successful redevelopment and relaunch of Atlantis Paradise Island in the Bahamas marked Kerzner’s first major project beyond the borders of his home country, with subsequent properties including Connecticut’s Mohegan Sun and, more recently, the eight hotels currently operating under the One&Only title, establishing him internationally.
Kerzner was named recipient of the Lifetime Achievement award at the International Hospitality Investment Conference in March 2019. One&Only Portonovi, the group’s first European hotel, and One&Only Mandarina within the multi-billion dollar Mandarina development, are both set to open this year.
