Sleep Set 2017 concepts announced
The 2017 Sleep Set competition is set to see Stonehill & Taylor, MKV Design, 1508 London and Il Prisma look to the experience economy to explore new perspectives in hotel design.
Inspired by this year’s theme of ‘Loyalty: Lessons in Love’, the immersive guestroom experiences will look to challenge barriers, perceptions and emotions.
Stonehill & Taylor will create an experimental pop up pod that will look into the soul of users, illustrating how being loyal to sustaining oneself is the ultimate lesson in love. Vince Stroop, Principal at Stonehill & Taylor, comments: “Set in an abstracted forest, the Hotel Irus reflects and draws from a multicultural wealth of inspiration that is designed to honour the environment, embrace globalisation, respect cultural differences and create a unique experience regardless of user or location. And, to underscore the approach of building an engaged world community, the Hotel Irus vision has been designed in New York, crafted in Istanbul and will debut in London.”
Secondly, MKV Design has taken inspiration from what is critical to the here and now, and what impacts on the future. Describing the concept, Maria Katsarou Vafiadis, founder and Managing Director of MKV Design states: “Loyalty and love are fundamental to us as human beings. We need to receive loyalty and love, and we need to give them. They frame our relationships with family and friends, and with our habitats; they influence what we say and do, what we experience and consume and what we feel about the life we are living. Loyalty and love are critical to the here and now and they also generate a legacy for the future. Yet, we can be profligate and promiscuous with our loyalties, using up finite resources and rejecting commitment in favour of the latest must-do-have-hold. Our Sleep Set will belong somewhere within this big canvas. Inspired by an article about an island which made us think about the future.”
Also participating is 1508 London, whose design will examine how small details can create lasting memories and emotional connections. Speaking about the project, Hamish Brown, Partner at 1508 London says: “Details incite an emotional connection to a space and bring guests back through creating and highlighting fragments of the space we allow the guest’s imagination to play a part in creating a room that is personal to them. These fragmented details are what form people’s memories when visiting special places. They are the details that create an emotional connection to a space and bring people back. They are the creator of meaningful moments. These details are the small window handle that opens to reveal the stunning scenery beyond. Visitors will be invited to play a part in imagining a space full of moments of attraction for them, moments that in turn create loyalty and love.”
Finally, Il Prisma Group’s offering will explore how a one-night stand can be converted into a long-term love affair. Il Prisma Group Country Manager, Gilberto Vizzini explains: “Hotels and their designers now have a great opportunity to elicit guest loyalty by combining physical and digital worlds into a new ‘phigital’ paradigm. This has the potential not only to create connections between the hotel and its neighbourhood, but to deliver new networks for guests when they return home. In our Sleep Set, we will be proposing a system suitable for all types of hotels that explores the “phigital” model. The results will be unexpected, flexible, sociable and sexy.”
