Marriott partners with Piero Lissoni for Autograph’s Hungarian debut

Autograph Collection Hotels by Marriott has made its debut in Hungary with the opening of Dorothea Hotel, Budapest, Autograph Collection.

Evoking the charm of Hungary’s golden age, Dorothea Hotel invites guests into an unexpected city centre sanctuary designed by Piero Lissoni. Housed across three historic buildings in Budapest’s District V, the new hotel is named after Archduchess Dorothea, an influential character of the 1800s who brought significant cultural and economic development to the city alongside her spouse, Palatine Joseph.

Upon arrival at the new Marriott hotel, guests are greeted by an ornate ceiling and walls adorned with portraits by Hungarian art and fashion photographer Zoltán Tombor, whose bespoke works are also found throughout guestrooms. Entering the reception court, guests will find a striking long drop glass chandelier, as well as a heritage staircase standing against a blue Zsolnay tile wall.

Dorothea Hotel’s 216 guestrooms and suites are split into two distinct design categories, contemporary and heritage, all equipped with modern amenities. The contemporary guestrooms feature furnishings in a soft beige colour palette, with pops of orange contrasting with dark wood flooring and peacock blue curtains. Positioned alongside Tombor’s artwork is photography that documents Budapest’s urban progression through history.

Located in the oldest building, heritage guestrooms are identified by doors adorned with portraits of women from the 1800s, sourced from the Hungarian National Gallery. Inside, decorative cornicing wraps around large Neo-Renaissance-style windows, framing soft furnishings with subtle floral embroidery inspired by local folk motifs. Heritage guestrooms offer four-poster canopy beds, a green velvet sofa and black and white carpeting juxtaposed with dark wood herringbone flooring.

At the heart of the hotel is the inner courtyard – home to Pavilon Restaurant & Bar, a lush garden oasis where guests are immersed in nature. Helmed by Chef Carmine di Luggo, this restaurant brings locally-sourced, farm-to-table dishes to the city. Each Autograph Collection hotel is defined by an experience unique to that property. At this hotel, the unique feature is a herb wall within the restaurant that pays tribute to Palatine Joseph, the penultimate palatine of Hungary, who had a deep fascination for botany.

Upstairs, Anton’s Bar & Deli offers light bites and freshly baked pastries by day, and transforms into a dynamic bar and community space by night. The hotel is also anticipating a further two restaurant openings in 2024, both helmed by three-Michelin-starred Chef Dani García. Andalusian Brasserie BiBo will find home on the rooftop, while Alelí, an authentic osteria from Italy, will reside on the ground floor.

The hotel’s wellness facilities meanwhile include a spa, complete with a swimming pool, sauna, steam room and fitness centre.

“Each Autograph Collection hotel tells a truly unique story and Dorothea Hotel, Budapest, Autograph Collection is a shining example of this, reflecting the rich history of Budapest through a refined and sophisticated lens,” says Sandra Schulze-Potgieter, Vice President, Premium and Select Brands, Europe, Middle East and Africa, Marriott International. “From the revitalised historic architecture and storied guestrooms to a progressive dining experience and hidden spa, the hotel offers an authentic sense of place and an experience that invites guests to forge a meaningful connection with the destination.”
