At Sleeper, we’re always on the lookout for the latest trends and developments in hotel design. With that in mind, we’ve got the scoop on this year’s highly anticipated openings from Design Hotels, whose forthcoming members range from Indonesian beach houses to renovated sanitariums.

Innit Lombok, Indonesia – March 2023

Design Hotels Innit Lombok

Innit Lombak will comprise a cluster of seven beach houses, designed by Indonesian architect Andra Matin in collaboration with Gregorius Supie Yolodi. Guests will be transported to the island upon which the property resides via boat, where they will find a range of two-bedroom standalone structures – a modern take on the traditional Lombok Lumbung-style house. The site has been designed to embrace a spirit of outdoor living, with open-plan living and dining areas on the ground floor – where sand acts as flooring – and private bedrooms upstairs, all of which feature bespoke furnishings made by Indonesian designers from locally-sourced, natural materials. The beach houses have no televisions, with the intention to gently turn guests’ attention to their surroundings.

Mamula Island, Montenegro – March 2023

DH Mamula

The 19th century fortress and previously dormant islet has been restored and transformed into a 32-room property. Piotr Wisniewski of WeStudio combines Mid-Century design with local craftsmanship and bespoke furniture to create a warm, harmonious design language. The site will comprise three restaurants and four bars, as well as a spa, running track and creative space for hosting artists in residence and workshops. The hotel’s memorial gallery meanwhile will cover everything from the fortress’ initial construction to its use as a prison during World War II.

Tucked away on a little-explored Indonesian island of Sumba, Cap Karoso is a site brimming with Indonesian art and culture across a range of traditional huts and modernist structures housing 47 guestrooms and 20 villas. As a nod to the longstanding craft traditions of Indonesia, Cap Karoso has partnered with local ceramicists to craft one-of-a-kind pieces for the hotel. Conceptually and physically, the resort revolves around its farmland, with three hectares of organic agricultural land underpinning its two restaurants. As for additional amenities, the property will be home to a traditional Sumbanese house and a yoga pavilion.

Pnoēs Tinos, Greece – April 2023

DH Phoes

Pnoēs Tinos is a three-villa property that is “embraced by the earth, caressed by the wind and reborn by the water”, exemplifying a contemporary interpretation of Cycladic traditions. With Aristides Dallas – one of Greece’s most celebrated architects – at the helm of the project, its guiding principle will be a connection to the elements. The property’s interiors will consist of bespoke furniture, with an attention to local craftsmanship and soothing, tactile materials – seamless surfaces, earthy wooden decor, warm neutrals and natural fabrics. Guests will also have access to onsite gardens, including an orchard, Mediterranean herb garden, tea garden with flowers to make infusions and organic vegetable garden.

Manna, Greece – June 2023

Design Hotels Manna

Housed in a former sanatorium in Greece’s Peloponnese, the 32-room hotel is being fully renovated and designed by K-Studio. Manna’s rustic yet homely interior language has been derived from a mixture of architectural trends, drawing inspiration from both classical Greek techniques and Japanese design. A specific focus will be placed on wellbeing and nature, with guests having a direct connection to the surrounding mountainous region of Peloponnese. Communal spaces will include a dining room, ritual room, bar, lounge, library and spa with two treatment rooms.

Nobis Palma, Mallorca – August 2023

Design Hotels Palma

Located in the Old Town of Palma, Nobis Palma will find home in one of the city’s oldest buildings — a structure originally created as a Muslim palace that dates back to the 12th century. Helena Toresson of Wingårdhs and Spanish firms Jordi Herrero Arquitectos and Eduardo Garcia Acuna Arquitectos are leading the design of the property, which will merge the historic town’s past with the present. 26 guestrooms and 11 suites will be brought to life through natural and sustainable materials, and a litany of furnishings and lighting by renowned Scandinavian and Italian brands.

The Curator, Portugal – Late 2023

DH The Curator

The Palace of the Counts of Ribeira Grande, with origins at the start of the 18th century, will be the site of The Curator – a property of 44 Palace Rooms, 14 guestrooms and six studios. Located in Lisbon’s historic district of Belém, the hotel will lean into its rich cultural surroundings, with a 2051m² art museum on-site spotlighting 19th century Portuguese artwork. A restaurant meanwhile will be dedicated to regional flavours and produce, while other amenities will include an all-day canteen, garden, a small auditorium and a converted chapel to host cultural events.
