CallisonRTKL designs CitySuite in Manchester
Architecture and design practice CallisonRTKL has teamed up with CitySuites to design a new aparthotel that forms part of Manchester’s Embankment West development. The site comprises 147 serviced apartments, from studios through to five three-bedroom penthouses with views of Manchester Cathedral and the city.
CitySuites II provides a luxury and private home away from home setting, with the benefits and service of a five-star hotel. Floor-to-ceiling windows flood the apartments with natural light, while the exacting specification includes sleek contemporary kitchens with integrated appliances, speedy broadband and more.
Whether staying for a night or a year, guests can experience CRTKL’s amenity-led approach to design and CitySuites’ focus on customer experience across a communal lounge with concierge, an 18-metre swimming pool and a spa pool, together with a steam room, 24-hour gymnasium, several co-working spaces and café.
The development sits within the newly developed Embankment West neighbourhood, just a short walk from the city centre. CitySuites II is the latest piece of the regeneration, following on from CRTKL’s development of 356 rental homes delivered for the Affinity Living brand to suit the needs of today’s young professionals.
Hailed as one of the most significant and challenging projects in Manchester in recent years, CRTKL in partnership with CitySuites has unlocked an unrealised 10-year vision to transform underutilised land into an exciting new destination. Created on the former site of the Exchange Train Station, the project included the partial demolition of a viaduct to enable the creation of the new public square which is enjoyed by residents and the public alike, creating a hub of activity that forms a key gateway to the city’s Greengate district.
“CitySuites II’s design blends the best of the hospitality and residential sectors to create a market leading aparthotel as part of a mixed-use development,” says Matt Pickering, Associate Principal at CallisonRTKL. “It is the latest chapter of the Embankment West story, where we have transformed vacant land to create a new sense of place. The development is undoubtedly one of Greater Manchester’s true success stories of late.”
Allan Hemphill, Chief Development Officer for CitySuites, comments: “This is a project that required innovative design to help bring it to life. Working closely with CallisonRTKL, the result is a mixed-use destination that caters to different audiences, from leisure and business travellers to young professionals.”
