The city that never sleeps is living up to its name at present, with a conveyor belt of new hotel developments – from Broadway to Brooklyn – mooted for the Big Apple over the next three years, as investors and operators continue to benefit from its universal appeal and growing tourist arrivals (pre-Coronavirus).
Tophotelprojects currently has 45 projects, totalling 10,679 rooms, listed in its database in planning or under construction. According to the data service, eight of those will open this year, 13 are slated for 2022, and five will arrive in 2023. There’s also 13 projects still TBA, including a debut from furniture manufacturer RH.
Amongst the properties on the boards are three from Marriott, which will expand its portfolio by 1,431 keys, as well as a trio of new additions from Aloft Hotels, growing the music-inspired brand’s footprint by 907 keys. IHG’s Hotel Indigo brand will also launch three properties in the city, with a total room count of 430.

Virgin Hotel New York City
Becoming the brand’s new flagship when it lands at 1227 Broadway – between 29th and 30th Street – in the Big Apple’s NoMad neighbourhood this Fall, Virgin Hotels New York City is being developed by the Lam Group and features architecture and interior design by Mark Zeff. The building’s first and second floors will house retail, while Virgin will populate the levels above with 463 Chambers plus multiple concept suites, a roofscape pool and several dining outlets, including Commons Club and a rooftop bar.

Ace Hotel Brooklyn
Marking the third collaboration between Atelier Ace and Roman and Williams, following Ace Hotel New York and Ace Hotel New Orleans, the 287-room Ace Hotel Brooklyn will be the group’s second newbuild property. Its façade and interiors will be inspired by the egalitarian nature of the borough – from the industrial grit of its shipyards to the Neo-expressionism of Brooklyn-born artist Jean-Michel Basquiat – with the design nodding to the neighbourhood's complex fabric of communal and creative spaces.

Aman New York
Aman’s first urban outpost in the Americas will be situated at the crossroads of Fifth Avenue and 57th Street in Manhattan's historically significant Crown Building, which celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2021. Belgian-born architect Jean-Michel Gathy, Principal of Denniston International, has been tasked with paying homage to the building’s heritage while nodding to the brand's Asian roots across 83 rooms and suites, 22 private branded residences, three F&B venues, a jazz club and a 2,300m2 luxury spa.

Ritz-Carlton Manhattan Nomad
Designed by Rafael Vinoly Architects and brought to life by Yabu Pushelberg, Ritz-Carlton Manhattan Nomad will comprise 250 guestrooms and serviced residences, a fine-dining restaurant, a club lounge, spa, fitness centre and rooftop bar. Channelling the history of the NoMad neighbourhood, a tight-knit enclave since Madison Park’s founding in the 1600s, the interior aesthetic will blur the lines between private and public spaces to create an atmosphere that can be exclusive if needed or open when desired.

Six Senses New York
Housed in a pair of twisting towers designed by Bjarke Ingels, Six Senses’ North American debut will form a key element of The XI, a new mixed-use complex between Manhattan’s Hudson River and High Line. Marking the group’s first city hotel, the 137-key project will comprise 60,000ft2 of amenities including two restaurants and a spa, with interiors by Gabellini Sheppard and Gilles & Boissier. Accentuated by a travertine façade and oversized windows, the structure will boast the tallest buildings in West Chelsea.
