Sleepeezee to achieve Planet Mark certification for second year running
British bed manufacturer Sleepeezee is set to become the first in the industry to secure The Planet Mark sustainability certification for two consecutive years.
As a partner of The Eden Project, Planet Mark is a trusted international symbol for businesses to demonstrate continual improvement in environmental sustainability by using one metric – carbon dioxide. Members can also choose to measure Social Value, which provides a more holistic view of an organisation’s positive contributions to society and the environment.
Sleepeezee is one of those leading the way when it comes to sustainable practices, having been awarded Carbon Neutral Status in 2017 and achieving pas2060 Carbon Neutral Status in 2020, offsetting over 1,388 tonnes of CO2 from 2017 to 2019, with no waste going to landfill since 2012. Put into context that is the equivalent of offsetting 30 homes or taking over 300 cars off the road.
Eco-friendly initiatives are at the forefront of company’s goals, from ethically sourced materials and forward-thinking manufacturing processes to environmental projects at both a local and international level. Aiming to make a positive global impact, Sleepeezee has also planted 478 trees at local schools in Kent to support fossil fuel reduction schemes in Indonesia and India, as well as deforestation projects in the Amazon.
“Our business is dependent on natural resources to make beds that deliver an excellent night’s sleep. We have a simple and clear belief that one of our fundamental duties is to ensure our activities do not have a detrimental impact on the planet,” says Joint Managing Director Howard Wilson.
“The Planet Mark has undoubtedly helped us achieve these milestones by providing an independent, credible reporting system, encouraging us to continually focus on new objectives and communicate to our stakeholders while enabling the business to grow without compromising our ultimate responsibility – to safeguard the planet for future generations.”
The company is also committed to ensuring that products are produced sustainably. All timber is sourced under European Timber Regulations, ensuring the carbon footprint of each product is exceptionally low. British Wool is a component in many of the mattresses and Sleepeezee supports the Campaign For Wool, which promotes sustainable practices in sheep farming. Within the factory itself, energy usage has been reduced by replacing all fluorescent lighting with LED alternatives.
Steve Malkin, founder and CEO of The Planet Mark, comments: “Sleepeezee has made positive steps in the efficiency of its operations, and for that I applaud them. As the first in its industry to be Planet Mark certified, the company has already solidified its pioneer status, and the measures it has taken to offset its total carbon footprint are further evidence of its progressive attitude. Sleepeezee’s clients will rest soundly in the knowledge that the products they buy will be from a responsible company dedicated to positive change.”
