Marriott International has announced the topping out of the first Moxy Hotel in Portland. Designed by DLR Group, and located on the edge of the Pearl District, Moxy Portland has been developed by owner and operator Graves Hospitality in partnership with KCB Real Estate, and is slated to open in February 2021.

“Portland is a vibrant city that needed a hotel destination that not only reflects its cultural liveliness, but supports it,” comments DLR Group Principal Stephen Cavanaugh. “DLR Group’s design prioritises transparency and a strong connection to the outdoors. By embracing the surrounding community, Moxy Portland becomes a catalyst for guests craving an authentic local experience.”

The 197-key project will channel design elements including geometric patterns styled on rainfall, and a palette of earthy tones drawn from Columbia River basalt to counterpoint to blonde masonry and 20th century white terracotta architecture around it. The transparency theme is highlighted by way of glass walls running along the exterior at street level, as well as floor-to-ceiling windows bookending corridors to frame views of Mount Hood.

Food Cart Alley – the hotel’s ground-floor dining space – is inspired by the Pearl District’s cast of street vendors, and works to include members of this community as a rotating selection for guests.

“We understand the vital role of food trucks in shaping local identity,” explains Benjamin Graves, President and CEO of Graves Hospitality. “By integrating at least three or four food cart vendors into the Food Cart Alley of Moxy’s lobby, we are committed to preserving and showcasing this dynamic facet of Portland’s distinct culture.”
