Hotel June is set to open in Los Angeles’ Westwside on 22 June, marking a new chapter for Proper Hotels.
Occupying a mid-century building just a stone’s throw from the heart of Silicon Beach and the city’s picturesque coastline, the 250-room property will feature a modern coastal aesthetic and an immersive cultural experience thanks to collaborations with local creatives, artists and artisans.
Originally designed by LA-based architect Welton Becket, the classic lines of Hotel June’s exterior complement its restrained interiors, defined by warm natural oak, earthy finishes and custom furnishings.
Studio Collective has created a bright, contemporary scheme with a stripped-back aesthetic; spacious guestrooms, many of which offer ocean or city views, are decorated with a curated collection of furniture and select artwork sourced from local craftsmen and artists, reflecting the West Coast’s creative spirit.
For the F&B concepts, Hotel June has teamed up with Steve Livigni of Happy To Serve You Hospitality Group, taking cues from California’s diversity, agriculture, brewing, winemaking and distilling. Unveiled so far is Caravan Swim Club, a two-level outdoor restaurant serving cuisine inspired by California and a bar menu with Baja California influences – think natural, biodynamic wine and agave spirit-based cocktails.
Framed by greenery, meanwhile, a ground-level pool deck is decorated with teak loungers and a shaded terrace serving small plates and long drinks. The hotel lobby, with its living room and all-day restaurant, is a warm, engaging space that hosts workshops, performances, talks, tastings and live music. In line with its efforts towards sustainability, the hotel’s culinary programmes all aim to be free of single-use plastics.
With the launch of Hotel June, Proper co-founders Brian De Lowe and Brad Korzen have created a more approachable, value-focused embodiment of the brand’s vision; a neighbourhood hangout that caters to travellers who seek design, dining and community at an accessible price point.
Proper Hotels’ Santa Monica hotel recently received the prestigious AHEAD Americas Hotel of the Year award, with the Kelly Wearstler-designed project a firm favourite amongst judges. From the off, the California lifestyle takes centrestage – from the trio of dining venues to the sea breeze that washes over terraces. Carefully considered, densely layered but never overpowering, the scheme raises the bar for luxury hotel design with a pared-back sensibility that creates an immersive experience.
