IHG expands German portfolio
IHG has announced the opening of new hotels in two of Germany’s culturally rich cities, Berlin and Dresden.
The 132-key Hotel Indigo Dresden – Wettiner Platz is within walking distance of the city’s historic centre and one of its most famous sites, Brühl’s Terrace – nicknamed the ‘The Balcony of Europe’ – which stretches along the shore of the river Elbe. Meanwhile, former electricity plant Kraftwerk Mitte, which has found a new life as an arts centre, is also nearby and regularly plays host to DJs from across Europe. Within the same neighbourhood, the Academy Of Fine Arts in Dresden, HfBK Dresden, occupies a neo-Renaissance building featuring a striking glass dome.
The hotel takes its design cues from Dresden’s contrasting architecture styles; modern, industrial buildings and historical baroque architecture. In the public areas, a modern industrial feel is achieved through in the use of filament bulbs, scaffold table legs, slabs of solid wood and the use of copper and brass. Guestrooms are a contemporary take on the baroque architecture of Dresden, with wood-panelled walls and colours drawing inspiration from the copper verdigris (the blue-green patina that metals take on when weathered) of the city’s grand buildings.
Meanwhile, the 118-room Hotel Indigo Berlin – East Side Gallery takes its design cues from the creative energy of the East Side neighbourhood, marrying raw industrial architecture with retro elements such as graffiti blocks and a vibrant colour scheme, inspired by the famous Trabi car. All guestrooms are fully equipped with USB outlets, a 43” inch Smart TV and complementary WiFi throughout.
The onsite restaurant and bar, Gallery Restaurant, serves locally-sourced German cuisine in a tapas style. Upstairs, the Gallery Rooftop Bar offers panoramic views of the river Spree.
Hotel Indigo Berlin – East Side Gallery is located close to attractions such as Oberbaumbrücke, the former checkpoint between East and West Berlin, and Wrangelkiez, an area that forms part of Kreuzberg, with an array with shops, cafes and bars. Wrangelkiez is also famed for its eccentric street art, curated by a number of internationally renowned street artists.
