Savoy Palace sets June 2019 opening date
Savoy Palace – a Leading Hotels of the World property – is set to open in June 2019 in Funchal, the capital city of Portuguese archipelago Madeira. Designed by Nini Andrade Silva with RH+ Architects, the project is inspired by the surrounding landscape and culture of the island, with touches of the Belle Epoque period highlighted throughout.
Comprising 352 guestrooms and suites, an 11-room spa, 226 apartments, five restaurants, five bars, several pools and a large rooftop with panoramic views over the Atlantic, the resort is situated a short walk from Funchal’s Old Town.
Set within a curved structure, the design channels a blend of natural and cultural heritage, with the aesthetic bringing elements of volcanic landscapes, Madeiran embroidery, traditional wickerwork, and Madeiran fortified wine. Common areas emphasise colour and curves to suggest plant forms, and are punctuated by Art Nouveau-styled ornaments.
Guestrooms all include balconies, as well as distinct leisure and work areas against contemporary interiors with customised fabrics and made-to-measure furniture. Spaces range from 40 to 260m². Elsewhere, the design of the 3000m² spa has been inspired by the Laurissilva Forest – Madeira’s UNESCO World Heritage site and the largest surviving laurel forest in the world. The spa houses 11 treatment rooms, as well as a sauna, Turkish bath, jacuzzi, ice fountain, sensory showers and halo-therapy room.
A signature restaurant – Terreiro – is situated in a standalone building taking inspiration from traditional Madeiran architecture, and includes a Brasserie, Cocktail Bar, Water Bar and Chef’s Farm. In the main building there will be a further fine dining restaurant, along with two buffet restaurants and a pool restaurant. In addition, the resort will have five bars: Gastro Bar, Sunset Bar, Lobby Bar, Entertainment Bar and Garden Bar, with various live music events and DJs set to appear.
The main event space takes the form of a 928m² multifunctional room with a maximum capacity of 1,300, that can be divided into three seperate spaces. There will also be a lobby with a bar for group receptions.
