citizenM opens second hotel in New York

citizenM has returned to the Big Apple to launch citizenM New York Bowery, a 300-key sister hotel to the citizenM New York Times Square that opened in 2014. Designed by long-time partner Concrete Amsterdam, the new property will be the tallest building in its neighbourhood, standing 246-feet high on the oldest thoroughfare in Manhattan.

Known for its rich cultural heritage and vibrant art scene – anchored by the New Museum and emerging art galleries – the Bowery district has inspired the interiors at citizenM Bowery, which will be filled with an eclectic mix of contemporary art, photography, and objects by local artists.

“When we were looking for our next New York location, it became clear very quickly that Bowery is an exceptional destination,” says Rattan Chadha, founder of citizenM. “We don’t want to be just another building; we want to become part of the neighbourhood’s fabric while showing New York’s visitors a different side of the city. Even the art we use will be drawn from the local art scene, as well as international contributors.”

On entering the hotel through a plaza, guests are greeted by a spiral staircase leading towards the living room on the lower ground floor, featuring double-height ceilings, bookshelves and a 24/7 canteenM bar. Glass walls allow for plenty of daylight and open to a view of an adjacent park, mirrored inside with benches and picnic tables to reflect the same atmosphere as the public plaza.

Guestrooms feature artwork by the New Museum and its incubator New Inc, and are furnished with XL king-size wall-to-wall beds and HD TVs with a library of on-demand movies and streaming options. The room ambiance is fully controlled by an iPad, meaning the blinds, TV and lights with changeable colours can be customised to travellers’ needs.

Elsewhere, the property’s expansive cloudM rooftop bar and outdoor terrace occupies the entire 21st floor with 360-degree views of New York, and features Vitra furniture, oak cabinets and eye-catching chandeliers.

citizenM Bowery will be the company’s 13th property globally, and its second in the US. By 2020, the brand will have around 40 properties either open or in development globally – more than doubling its current portfolio. In North America alone, it plans to open a dozen hotels in major cities such as Seattle, Boston, Washington DC, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Miami. Further afield, citizenM will also consider venturing into new markets such as Toronto, Chicago, Austin, Silicon Valley and Denver.
