Muji opens first hotel
Japanese retailer Muji has announced the opening of its first hotel, the 79-key Muji Hotel in Shenzhen. Developed around the Muji concept – walk as much as you can, wherever you can; eat well; sleep well; stay fit – the project has been designed by Ryohin Keikaku to reflect an ‘anti-gorgeous’, ‘anti-cheap’ aesthetic.
Located in the UpperHills multi-use complex, the hotel features pillars and walls of traditional Chinese houses, repurposed here as interior walls and courtyards. Elsewhere, a new Muji store on the second floor introduces guests to the overall concept. Guestrooms have been designed with details including indirect lighting and coil mattresses to cultivate relaxation, whilst five room types offer a variety of configurations.
Elsewhere, the Muji Diner venue will serve up freshly prepared local foods inspired by home cooking, with the dinnerware the menu is presented on available in the store. Muji Books, meanwhile, offers a collection of 650 volumes in the common area’s library space. A small-scale gym and three conference rooms ranging from 70m² to 130m² completes the offer.
The Shenzhen location will be followed by a Beijing property in March 2018 and a Ginza, Tokyo hotel in spring 2019.
