100% Design reveals talks programme

100% Design has revealed its extensive talks programme, curated by Design Museum and featuring appearances by Asif Khan, Ron Arad, Paloma Strelitz and Afroditi Krassa. Taking place from 21-24 September, the talks will be held in a specially commissioned auditorium sponsored by LG Display and designed by Miska Miller-Lovegrove. Subjects will range from the influence of Brexit on design to ‘The Internet of Experiences’ and the role of design in social change.

Focussing on quality and depth, the talks will present agenda setting keynotes from thought leaders in the industry, and include daily trend reports from the Future Laboratory, WGSN and Steelcase. Architect Asif Khan, who was recently selected alongside Stanton Williams to design the new Museum of London, will open the show.

During Designer, Maker, User the design team behind the new Design Museum, Jan Hobel of John Pawson Architects and Allies and Morrison’s Simon Fraser, will share their experiences designing a new cultural institution for the 21st century, and offer a unique opportunity to engage with the museum’s programme ahead of its opening on 24 November. Elsewhere, London Design Guide Founder and Editor Max Fraser will introduce a selection of nominees for the Design Museum’s annual Designs of the Year exhibition and awards.

Research partners WGSN, The Future Laboratory and Steelcase will present and discuss their findings at daily trend reports, focussing on interior, retail and office design respectively. Steelcase’s research will examine the different ways companies can create workplaces to inspire employees and facilitate better engagement, with OnOffice Editor Helen Parton discussing alongside Rebecca Ruggles of Airbnb. WGSN will highlight key colour and texture trends for Spring/Summer 2018, while The Future Laboratory will delve into retail innovations ranging from the role of big data customer feedback, to the rise of a new sustainability-inspired aesthetic for fashion retailers.

Meanwhile, Mikael Ydholm of Ikea, Shumi Bose, curator of the British Pavilion at the current Venice Architecture Biennale, and Justin McGuirk, Design Museum Chief Curator, will predict what the homes of the future might look like, and discuss the wider societal implications of the changing domestic landscape. Martijn van der Heijden, digital strategist at Fabrique and Tom Hares, CEO and Founder of Buzzbike, will discuss new customer models, social networks, the future of virtual reality and numerous other innovations that may change the design landscape.

Jeremy Myerson will investigate the role of design in social, demographic and technological change in Putting Human Experience at the Centre of Design, while Daniel Gava, Mark Catchlove and Tom Lloyd will discuss the ability of design to transform our experiences in The New Office Experience, chaired by Oli Stratford, Editor of Disegno. This discussion will aim to outline how designers are responding to the demand for more flexible, smarter working experiences through innovations such as co-working spaces, digital nomads and hot-desking.

Confronting one of the biggest issues facing the industry at this year’s London Design Festival, Design and Brexit will look at the implications of the UK’s departure from the European Union for a historically international and outward looking industry. Here, Ben Evans, Director of the London Design Festival, Louise Jury of the Creative Industries Federation and Marcus Fairs, Founder and Editor in chief of Dezeen will form a panel that will ask what we can expect, how the European design community can protect its culture, and how the community can provide leadership and hope.

The unique experience of 100% Design has London at its heart. A panel discussion including Ben Rogers, Director of the Centre for London and Peter Murray, Chairman of New London Architecture will look at how designers contribute to a city that is both liveable and loveable. And as London’s areas develop and change their cultural identity, Futurecity, Argent and the Design Museum will discuss the ways in which design can help foster a sense of place. To mark the late opening on Thursday night, a special 100% Design PechaKucha will bring together Gravity Road, Beautiful Meme, Phillips’ Damien Whitmore and Special Projects for fast-paced, vibrant presentations.

Saturday 24 September is Consumer Day, when 100% Design will welcome the public for its final day. Daniel Hopwood, former President of the British Institute of Interior Designers and presenter of BBC TV’s Great Interior Design Challenge; Jordan Cluroe and Russell Whitehead aka 2 Lovely Gays; and Meriel Scott, Director of Precious McBane, will present Interior Design Masterclass, with tips on how to combine beauty and practicality in the home. There will also be a discussion presented by Kukka Founder Rona Meychus Koblenz examining the unique experience of designing from or in the Middle East, and how the region’s craft, heritage, daily life and political realities influence the work and lives of its designers.

A separate programme will be hosted in the Forum, sponsored by RIBA Appointments, focusing on professional development.
