Engelgeer showcases Ceremony

Ceremony features as the latest assemblage from textile designer Mae Engelgeer with long-standing partner ICE International.

Ceremony is an innovative rug design consisting of natural materials and layouts inspired by traditional Japanese tatami mats blended to fashion innovative, contemporary designs. With three different designs, the rugs are hand-knotted in wool and hemp yarns, resulting in luxurious and soft rugs.

A small round rug made from wool and silk forms an additional layer, for sitting or framing, fulfilling the function of silk pillows used on traditional tatami floors in Japan.

Colours are muted to stay true to a minimalistic aesthetic with a beige, brown and nude colour palette, the rugs match the latest series of works Engelgeer is creating in white and off white, black and a peach shade.

The entire collection is loosely inspired by a traditional Japanese aesthetic, whilst incorporating the graphic pattern characteristic to Engeleerʼs work.

This project features as one in a series of collaborations between the designer and ICE International. Mae Engelgeer says: “We have built a solid relationship and have grown to fully understand each other. ICE is open to my ideas and adamant to realise them, no matter how complicated. Most importantly, they succeed in enthusing the knotters with my ideas, which is the most important aspect of the process, since only they can make the project work.”
