New penthouse for The Ludlow

Designer and hotelier Sean MacPherson has created a culturally inspired Penthouse suite for The Ludlow Hotel, a member of Design Hotels.

Located in New York’s Lower East Side, the hotel’s penthouse reflects the anarchistic eighties synonymous with the neighbourhood. MacPherson says: “Along with layers of history, there was a grittiness and nervous energy. You had a sense something could break out any minute, whether it was street art or a riot,” regarding his first experience of the area.

Designed to maximise social space, the 1500ft² penthouse features a fully equipped kitchen, dining area, living room, sitting area and an entertainment centre complete with vintage vinyls and record player. The king-sized bed is dressed in Bellino Fine Linens, while the master bathroom, one of two in the suite, boasts a rainfall shower, windowed soaking tub and accessories by Parisian fashion house Maison Martin Margiela.

Situated on the 17th floor of the hotel, the penthouse’s floor-to-ceiling warehouse casement windows and a 1000ft² furnished terrace allows for panoramic views across Manhattan and the Brooklyn Bridge.

The apartment also showcases a curated collection of vintage and contemporary furniture and artwork. Hardwood floors and handmade silk rugs compliment artisan-crafted Moroccan pendant lamps and Indo-Portuguese style beds. Petrified wood nightstands come from Brooklyn furniture temple Organic Modernism, while bronzed stools by Novello Finotti are placed in the lounge area.

Masterminded by New York hoteliers Sean MacPherson, Ira Drukier and Richard Born, The Ludlow Hotel was designed to provide a ‘living room’ for the local and visiting creatives. The 184-room hotel incorporates influences from the Lower East Side, the birthplace of New York’s early punk and rock scene, and fastly becoming one of the cities most fashionable neighbourhoods.
