Ligne Roset reissues Paulin’s TV chair

The TV chair stems from a Pierre Paulin creation dating back to the 1950s, which has undergone certain adaptations such as changing its wooden base to that of satin black lacquered tubular steel.

It was precisely to testify to the vitality and freshness of Paulin’s design that Ligne Roset chose to reissue this original chair in January 2009. In 2015, as part of the reissue of major pieces from Pierre Paulin’s exhibition at the Arts Ménagers 1953, including the Daybed banquette and Le secrétaire mural, Ligne Roset is also reissuing the original version of the TV chair with its wooden base.

The TV chair demonstrates the influence of Charles Eames, especially the chair presented by the latter at the MOMA, New York in 1940 as part of the ‘Organic Design in Home Furnishings’ exhibition. In particular though, the TV chair signifies the beginnings of all Pierre Paulin’s future work on the structure of his furniture. In effect, the metal structure is much more than just a support for the legs: it constitutes the very armature of the chair from which springs all the support for the body.

With the use of moulded foam and a fabric cover which dresses its seat and back like clothing, these chairs prefigure the approach which would ultimately make possible the freedom of form which would result in the iconic Mushroom, Tulip, The Tongue or Ribbon Chair seating.

Foam and fabric make for visual fluidity as the profile of the seat traces with finesse the contours of a boomerang, at the same time as remarkable comfort, supported by the suspension of steel wires on springs. The rigour of the metal structure, apparent in the one-piece chair base, disappears completely into the seat and back, the soft, sensual, organic.

To take account of the increase in the average size of the population since 1953, the reissued chair scrupulously respects the original design whilst gaining several centimetres in width x depth x height. The base is offered in the original satin black lacquered finish and also in brilliant chrome.
